Construction worker killed on I-64, company releases statement

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. — A construction worker is dead after an early morning accident in Cabell County.

Barboursville Poilce said the victim was working on I-64 in the eastbound lanes of the construction area at the 17-mile marker around 4:30 a.m. Saturday. The worker, according to investigators, stepped into the traffic lane and was struck by an oncoming bus.

The worker was employed by Triton Construction.

The company released a statement through the state DOH:

“Triton is deeply saddened to confirm that a member of our construction team was fatally injured while performing work on I-64 as part of an active highway construction project,” said Jason Hunter, vice president of construction for Triton Construction.

“First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the employee’s family, friends, and co-workers during this incredibly difficult time,” Hunter said. “We have reached out to the family and are offering our full support, including counseling and other resources, to help them and our team members cope with this tragedy.

“Safety is our top priority, and we are cooperating fully with authorities and the WVDOH as they investigate the circumstances of this incident. Out of respect for the ongoing investigation, and the family’s privacy, we will not be providing additional details at this time.”

The eastbound lanes were closed for three hours after the collision.

The name of the worker has not been released.
