Fan who threw a punch at Riverside game was actually a student

QUINCY, W.Va. — An investigation is underway after a dust up at the end of a high school basketball game in Kanawha County. Riverside defeated Parkersburg in the game played at Riverside High School Tuesday night.

Video posted to social media has gotten a lot of attention of actions at the end of the game. The video vividly shows a person in the stands coming onto the floor and taking a swing a Parkersburg player. The punch was a glancing blow and the fan was immediately shoved back.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department had a deputy at the game and is conducting an investigation. Deputies say although in street clothes, the person who left the bleachers was actually a player for the Riverside JV basketball team and intervened in a scuffle between a Parkersburg player and a member of the Riverside varsity squad.

Deputies said if any charges were filed, they would be juvenile charges and very little could be released. Riverside High School Principal Steven Loftis said the school is aware of the situation and is addressing the matter.
