Arrest made in Kanawha County shooting

UPDATE: 2/24/2026 6:40 p.m. A Kanawha County man is in custody in connection to a Monday night shooting.

Kenneth “Smokey” Allen, 34, was arrested Tuesday afternoon at Cedar Grove Farm off Heizer Creek in Winfield. Allen has been charged with malicious wounding.

He is being held at the Western Regional Jail on a $100,000 cash bond.

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. — Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies have secured an arrest warrant in connection with a Monday night shooting.

Kenneth Dale Allen, 34, of St. Albans, is charged with malicious wounding after allegedly shooting Mark Aaron Paul, 47, also of St. Albans in the face at a residence on Coal River Road.

Deputies were looking for Allen Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting occurred at around 9 p.m. Monday.

According to a news release from the sheriff’s department, “It is alleged that a man known as ‘Smokey’ entered the victim’s residence along with another man named Will Rhodes. ‘Smokey’ was reportedly wearing a black mask at the time. Witnesses allege that ‘Smokey’ pointed a firearm at Mr. Paul and stated, ‘If you move, I will kill you.’ When the victim moved, he was shot in the face.”

Deputies said they learned that Smokey was Kenneth Allen. They said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Paul was conscious, alert, and able to speak, deputies said. He was also able to walk to the ambulance before he was taken to a hospital.
