Arrest warrant was outstanding for John Dempsey

State Police investigators are still looking for answers in connection with a Logan County man who killed two men this past week and then was shot and killed by police.

Court records show John Dempsey had failed a drug test in connection with a previous burglary charge and a circuit judge ordered his arrest with a warrant signed Jan. 3.

The warrant was unable to be executed before Dempsey broke into the Logan home of Grover Morrison, 88, early this week and then the home of Freddy Williams, 57, of Lyburn, a few days later. Troopers say Dempsey killed both men but they still aren’t sure the exact days or times.

Dempsey made a threat on police following a pursuit Thursday night and was shot and killed.

PREVIOUS     The Logan County man wanted in connection with the murder of an 88 year old man is dead following a police pursuit.

West Virginia State Police troopers spotted John Edward Dempsey, 37, shortly after he carjacked a vehicle in Taplin Thursday night. That’s when the suspect led troopers on a chase that came to an end near Man when Dempsey pulled over.

“The suspect got out of the vehicle with a weapon and presented an immediate threat to the officers there so they responded to the threat and as a result the suspect died from the injuries he received,” said West Virginia State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous.

Dempsey was wanted in connection with the murder of Grover Morrison, 88, of Logan, earlier this week.

Prior to being spotted by police, Sgt. Baylous said Dempsey is believed to be involved in two other incidents in Taplin Thursday.

“We believe he was involved in a murder there and then a separate attempted home invasion right near the scene of the murder,” said Sgt. Baylous.

Sgt. Baylous said the home invasion failed because the homeowner had a weapon.

Following the home invasion, Dempsey proceeded to steal a vehicle and that is when he was spotted by police and eventually shot and killed.

At this time details regarding the incidents in Taplin have not been released.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing .
