West Virginia baseball is off to a strong start in the 2026 season, but will be moving forward without a prominent piece of its pitching staff.<\/p>\n
Mountaineer head coach Steve Sabins confirmed Tuesday pitcher Chase Meyer is no longer with the program.<\/p>\n
\u201cJunior right-handed pitcher Chase Meyer is no longer with our baseball program,\u201d Sabins said. \u201cI want to thank Chase for his contributions the past three years to our team and wish him the best in his future endeavors.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Mountaineers\u2019 lone selection to the Preseason-All Big 12 Team, Meyer was removed from the team\u2019s official roster earlier in the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Meyer was West Virginia\u2019s top rated pro prospect by D1 Baseball, which listed him the Big 12\u2019s No. 7 pro prospect entering this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n He was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-America Second Team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The right-hander began this season in a limited relief role as a result of a broken finger on his pitching hand suffered not long after Thanksgiving. Meyer appeared in two of WVU\u2019s first 10 games and had a 1-0 record with a 2.70 earned-run average, no hits allowed and five strikeouts over 3.1 innings.<\/p>\n Meyer\u2019s first appearance this season came at Georgia Southern in relief of Ben McDougal with an 0-2 count. He dropped in a curve ball on his first pitch for a called third strike in an outing that amounted to him recording a win.<\/p>\n \u201cChase Meyer has the best out pitch arguably in the country in his curve ball,\u201d Sabins said.<\/p>\n Meyer\u2019s second and ultimately final outing this season came the following week at Liberty when he went two innings, allowing one run on two walks and a pair of hit batsmen.<\/p>\n In 2025, Meyer led the team in wins, finishing 9-1 across 48 innings over 22 appearances and three starts. He struck out 63, walked 38 and had a 3.94 ERA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n While assuming a far more featured role, Meyer also displayed significant improvement from his freshman season in 2024, which he finished 1-1 with a 8.38 ERA in 19.1 innings. He struck out 28 and walked 24 that year.<\/p>\n \u201cThe reality is he\u2019s been our get out of jail free card, because we\u2019ve brought Chase Meyer in every spot where our backs against the wall and it\u2019s basically if you don\u2019t get out of this, you\u2019re going to lose the game,\u201d Sabins said. \u201dHis stuff is so good that you\u2019re OK losing the game because you\u2019re in such a bad situation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Meyer led the team with nine wins in 2025 and was West Virginia’s lone selection to this year’s Preseason-All Big 12 Team. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":72,"featured_media":627135,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[10,46],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-660453","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sports","category-wvu-sports"],"yoast_head":"\n
